I can pinpoint the exact moment that nerd path was set before me. It was 25 years ago and I had received my first video game console. The Atari 2600 wood paneled edition. That Christmas day while playing Enduro my life was changing in ways not apparent at the time.
It turns out that Ataris were merely gateway consoles leading to much harder fare in the Nintendo Entertainment System (and most notably for me Skate or Die and Basewars) and once I started down that path even nerdier activities crept in. My freshman year in high school I began playing Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. Later I found my way to Magic: the Gathering and tabletop strategy games. Thus was my fate sealed.
So, let this be a cautionary tale. Mommas don’t let your babies grow up to be nerdy.
